Four of Peter Goldsworthy's novels - Honk If You Are Jesus, Three Dog Night, Maestro and Wish - have been adapted for the stage, and one more is in the process of being adapted.

Honk If You Are Jesus was jointly adapted by Goldsworthy and the theatre director Martin Laud Gray, for the State Theatre Company of South Australia, and premiered at the 2006 Adelaide Festival of Arts. A sell-out success, It won several awards, including the 2006 Ruby Award for Best New Work, and the 2006 Advertiser 'Oscart' Award for Best Play.

Three Dog Night was adapted by Melbourne actor and playwright Petra Kalive, for her company Two Blue Cherries. After a successful season in Melbourne's 45Downstairs, it toured to Adelaide's Festival Centre in March 2009.

Also in March 2009, State Theatre of South Australia premiered the stage version of Maestro, adapted by Goldsworthy and his daughter, acclaimed pianist and writer, Anna Goldsworthy, and directed by Martin Laud Gray.
